Part of the second National Plan for Open Science announced by the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation on July 6, 2021, the Open Science Prize for Open Source Software in Research aims to highlight projects and teams working on the development and dissemination of open source software, and which contribute to the construction of a common good of primary importance.

The objective is to recognize the important contribution of open source software production and to draw the attention of the scientific community to exceptional or very promising achievements, giving visibility to productions that can serve as a model for the next generations of researchers and engineers.

The award has several categories that distinguish projects according to their scientific and technical dimensions, their capacity to train and animate their community and the quality of their documentation.
